Job Title: Senior Mechanical Engineer
Location: Michigan, UK
Salary: $100K – $125K
The Senior Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the design and development of precision CNC grinding machines from concept through to troubleshooting after assembly. This role involves creating concept designs based on customer requirements, leading design reviews, developing detailed 3D models, and managing projects through to completion. It is a hybrid position, with the expectation of being onsite at least 25% of the time if not local or relocating.
Key Responsibilities

Design & Development
Create and refine mechanical designs for CNC grinding machines, including spindles, linear guides, dressers, bearings, and structural frames. -
Innovation in Grinding Technology
Introduce design improvements that enhance machine performance, focusing on thermal stability, vibration control, and tool life, while meeting budget and schedule targets. -
CAD & Simulation
Use SolidWorks to model designs, create assemblies, drawings, and BOMs. Conduct and review simulations to validate the performance and durability of machine components. -
Prototyping & Testing
Oversee the assembly and testing of prototypes, making iterative design adjustments based on test results to achieve optimal performance. -
Collaboration
Partner with Electrical and Applications Engineering teams to integrate mechanical systems with controls for full CNC functionality. Maintain professional communication with vendors and customers. -
Mentorship & Oversight
Guide and support junior engineers, reviewing their work for accuracy, compliance, and adherence to engineering standards. -
Technical Support
Provide expertise during assembly, commissioning, and customer field service. Support troubleshooting efforts for service and repair. -
Continuous Improvement
Identify opportunities to improve design efficiency, reduce costs, and enhance the quality and productivity of CNC grinding equipment and engineering processes. -
Travel
Visit customer and vendor sites as required for technical support or validation.
Required Knowledge & Skills

Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling, assemblies, drawings, and BOM creation (AutoCAD 2D familiarity is a plus).

Strong technical knowledge of machine design principles and systems.

Experience with design for manufacturability and Finite Element Analysis (FEA).

Problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and sound engineering judgment.

Ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.

Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools.

Knowledge of machine tool applications and related processes.
